ADDICTION TREATMENT & CONTINUITY OF CARE SERVICES

The following are a list of Massachusetts-based acute treatment (detoxification), crisis stabilization, transition, residential programs, and social services, including male, female, adolescent, and family facilities.

**Starred programs offer prenatal and pediatric care, OBGYN services, and aftercare planning for pregnant women.  Women in any trimester of pregnancy can enter these programs.

The path to recovery is complex and should be based on each individual's needs.  Depending on the individual's health status and primary drug of abuse, the path often follows this sequence:

  • Acute Treatment services (ATS), also known as detoxification. Average length of stay is 3 to 7 days

  • Crisis Stabilization (CSS) and/or Transitional Support Services (TSS). Average length of stay is 14 to 28 days

  • Residential Services. Average length of stay varies, generally 3 to 6 months

Please remember PAATHS (Providing Access to Addictions Treatment, Hope and Support) is a one-stop shop for anyone (individuals, families, community partners, other treatment providers) looking for information about, or access to, substance use treatment services. 774 Albany Street, Boston is open 7 days a week. Today’s hours are 7:30 a.m - 6:00pm.

ACUTE TREATMENT SERVICES / DETOX (ATS)

Acute treatment services (ATS) provide medically monitored detoxification (detox). Programs provide 24-hour nursing care, under the consultation of a medical director, to monitor an individual's withdrawal from drugs and alcohol, and alleviate symptoms. Average length of stay is 3 to 7 days.

CLINICAL STABILIZATION / STEP DOWN SERVICES (CSS)

Provides clinical stabilization services for individuals leaving detox or stabilization services for patients who need acute treatment, but do not meet the criteria for medically-necessary detox (ATS) services.  Average length of stay varies.

TRANSITIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES (TSS)

Transitional Support Services are short-term residential programs for individuals who need further stabilization after detoxification (ATS).  Admission is restricted to individuals discharged from ATS (detox) and homeless clients.  TSS programs provide 24-hour supportive care, case management, and residential housing.  Average length of stay is 14 to 21 days.
